The word Shotokan actually evolved from two words. Shoto means Pine-needles, and Kan means Hall. Shoto was the name given to Funakoshi by his students through this word Shotokan evolved. This is also a fact that Funakoshi never called this game as Shotokan; instead, he used the term karate for this game.
